From Greek word for numbness, narcosis implies a dissociative state of paralysis. Referencing this notion, Rainbow Narcosis is a 9 minute 3D animation following a headless lamb through a series of otherworldly environments. With a visual style that shifts between photo-realism and video games, the work highlights the increasing disconnect between whats real and whats mediated.
Drawing as much on the past and mythology, as on science fiction and digital culture, it is unclear what the story means, where it leads or what the moral is. From the Palais Garnier to a modernist loft, the subject matter references wealth and power, while maintaining an ambiguity that seduces only to unsettle. An endless loop of sleek but ultimately vacuous simulation where meanings don’t quite materialize, Rainbow Narcosis is a cinematic response to a digital reality beyond meaning.
Jonathan Monaghan (b. New York, 1986) creates animations with high-end technology used by Hollywood, advertising and video games. His work investigates the slippery divide between reality and fiction and commercialism and contemporary art.
Monaghan’s work has been exhibited in venues such as the BFI Southbank in London, the International Rotterdam Film Festival, the Today Art Museum in Beijing, the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington DC, and the Anthology Film Archives in New York. His work has been featured in the Washington Post, DC Magazine, Washington City Paper, and TimeOut NY.
